There are so many reasons responsible for loss of pictures from any storage device. Now let us go through few prominent scenarios:

  • Accidental Deletion: The very obvious cause for digital picture loss is deletion. Generally we delete unwanted files from any storage device in order to make space for storing new files. While deleting unwanted photos, if you accidentally select and delete important picture using Shift + Delete key then it lands you in severe data loss since the pictures deleted by this key combination do not move to Recycle Bin instead bypass the Recycle Bin. Sometimes unfortunately you end up in pressing “Delete All” button of your camera while previewing the pictures. You can’t find those priceless photos any more as they are completely deleted from your device.
  • Malware Attack: Malware is another hazardous stuff behind photo loss from any data storage device. It can corrupt entire file system or a particular file, folder and makes it inaccessible. If your Windows computer is infected by virus and you connect your memory card to virus infected PC then there is a maximum chance that it gets infected since virus spread from one device to other. Thus all the pictures stored on the device gets infected and become inaccessible.
  • Memory card corruption: If the memory card gets corrupted then you cannot access a single file stored on that device. The memory card gets corrupted due to improper handling of the device like abrupt pulling of memory card from camera or card reader while file transfer is in progress, turning off the camera before the image is completely written to the memory card, batteries conking out as the files are being transferred directly from camera to Windows OS computer. This may cause corruption of the memory card file system and entire data becomes inaccessible.
  • Formatting Device: Sometimes you may accidentally format the drive containing important pictures instead of formatting some unimportant drive of Windows OS system leads to data loss. In addition to this you may intentionally format Windows OS drive to get rid of virus but this not only removes virus but also erases all the data stored on that drive. Accidentally clicking on “Format” option provided in may digital cameras while performing any other operations deletes all the images from the memory card of the camera.
  • Additional data loss scenarios on Windows PC:
    • Windows OS re-installation.
    • Software or hardware malfunctioning.
    • Sudden power surge during file transfer on Windows OS.
    • Usage of pirated or outdated third party applications on Windows PC.
    • Capturing photos, when the camera battery is nearly empty results in loss of captured photo.

Precautionary measures to avoid picture loss:

Install and run best anti virus scan regularly to avoid picture loss from virus attack.
